So for class this year my professors decided to try turning our advanced animation class into a portfolio class, giving us free reign to study, learn and practice any CG discipline we chose. This could be anything from character design to motion capture. We would then focus on that for an entire semester and create (or hopefully create) and industry worthy portfolio piece. I have always admired and been in awe of visual effects, so I decided that was the way I wanted to go. For this semester I will be focusing on video game effects. First I plan to brush up and lean particle effects on one of the most robust and easily accessible game engines on the web; The Unreal Development Kit. After a strong foundation of timing and creation methods, as well as copying a few tutorial effects, I will branch out and create my own. I hope to be able to learn and create my own versions of common game effects such as explosions, muzzle flashes etc. then moving on to a magical effect and finally an effect using multiple 3D models.
By September 22nd, I hope to have followed along with and finished
Eat3D's Cascade and Unreal VFX tutorials
3DMotive's Visual FX and Cinematics in UDK
